Bio-based isocyanates are a crucial component in achieving fully bio-based polyurethane/polyaspartic materials. This represents a frontier in green chemistry. The core challenge lies in replacing traditional petroleum-based isocyanates with renewable resources, thereby reducing carbon footprints at the source.
The main challenge in synthesizing bio-based isocyanates lies in converting biomass into an amine-containing precursor, which then reacts with phosgene (or environmentally friendly alternatives) to form isocyanate groups (-NCO).
Fully Bio-based Polyaspartic Coatings
Formula: Bio-based Isocyanate + Bio-based Polyaspartic Resin
Advantages: 100% bio-carbon content, meeting EU ecolabel standards (e.g., for wind turbine blades, electric vehicle battery pack protection).
Eco-friendly Adhesives
Used for wood/food packaging (e.g., bio-based polyurethane adhesives for soda bottles), no risk of aromatic substance migration.
Biomedical Materials
Bio-based IPDI synthesis to create biodegradable polyurethanes used for surgical sutures and drug delivery carriers.
Covestro
Product: Some bio-based Desmodur® eco N (30% bio-based content)
Raw Material: Castor oil-based hexamethylenediamine → HDI
Evonik
Technology: VESTAMIN® Terra (bio-based hexamethylenediamine) → Used for synthesizing custom isocyanates
Mitsubishi Chemical

Start-ups
Lygos (USA): Yeast-engineered bio-based maleic acid → converted to furandiamine
100% Bio-based Target
Replacing petroleum-based methanol with bio-based methanol (extracted from Brazilian sugarcane).
Carbon Cycling Technology
CO₂ capture to synthesize bio-based isocyanates (e.g., LanzaTech’s gas fermentation process).
Bio-inorganic Hybrid
Nano-SiO₂ modified bio-based HDI to improve coating hardness (Fraunhofer Institute, Germany).
When developing bio-based polyaspartic systems, focus on:
NCO Content Matching: Bio-based isocyanates have broader molecular weight distributions and require precise functional group measurements.
Curing Compatibility: Bio-based HDI can be mixed with petroleum-based PAE but requires catalyst optimization when paired with bio-based PAE.
Certification Requirements: Prioritize certified suppliers.
Currently, the price of bio-based polyaspartic isocyanates is 50-120% higher than petroleum-based alternatives, and it is recommended for high-value-added scenarios (e.g., medical devices, high-end automotive paints).
